I'd like to thank the academy...

OK, I'll admit it. I have often looked at those little awards and decorations and such on the edges of other people's blogs and wondered how and why they got there. I figured it must be something that happens after you do this for a long time and lots of people know you or think you're smart. Notice I said "or" there, not "and." Some of the people some of the time, but not all of them all of the time, you know. But I digress.

So I read MrMacrum's blog this morning and was admiring his new award, this scribbler thing and thinking well he gets that stuff because he's a really cool writer and he writes fiction even and is doing that whole write-a-50,000-word-novel-in-one-month-crazy-person-thing. Man, that's nuts. I'm doing NaBloPoMo, but compared to 50,000 words that go together in one thought process, that's baby stuff. I'm lucky if I can string 500 words together in a single thought process without getting distracted.

So anyway, one of the rules of getting that spiffy award is you have to name five other bloggy friends whom you think are deserving of such accolades. Well, that's pretty cool. But then he named me. Me? Like he thinks I should get an award? I know people who are more inclined to think I might need a distemper shot than an award. I have family members who I am sure will lament the notion of me getting an award. "Don't encourage her," they'll say, and roll their eyes.

There are some rules to the award thing. Oh, I said that. Well, there are. The award originated at the blog of this high school journalism teacher, which is as noble a profession as one can hope to achieve in one lifetime, particularly if one is a masochist. Who never wants to make any money. Or be famous. Or any of those things generally associated with success by American standards.

The rules are (as copied directly from the site):
  • Each Superior Scribbler must in turn pass The Award on to 5 most-deserving Bloggy Friends.

  • Each Superior Scribbler must link to the author & the name of the blog from whom he/she has received The Award.

  • Each Superior Scribbler must display The Award on his/her blog, and link to This Post, which explains The Award.

  • Each Blogger who wins The Superior Scribbler Award must visit this post and add his/her name to the Mr. Linky List. That way, we'll be able to keep up-to-date on everyone who receives This Prestigious Honor!

  • Each Superior Scribbler must post these rules on his/her blog.

So, Like Macrum, I am now at that point in things where I have to figure out which rules I have met and which ones I have left to meet. I linked to him and his site, I linked to the award creator's site, I signed the linky list and left a comment, I posted the rules.

Now comes the awful part. Naming five people I think ought to get this cool thing. See, I like lots of bloggers. I read tons of them each day, probably to the detriment of my so-called life. But I like to read, and I like to write, and I like to learn how people think and how they communicate those thoughts. I will leave people out of this list who ought to be on it. I am sorry. I hate rules.

Jen at Never A Dull Moment is one of my favorites. She balances two kids, life, some artsy-crafty things and a husband and still manages to blog and be funny. She gives me a eye into what the life of a mom is like. I am in awe of what she and her peers do every day. Amazing.

Robin at Around the Island is another favorite. Her photos and stories of raising two small children in Tel Aviv fascinate this Irish gal from New England. And her photos are stunning.

Queenie over at The Queen's Blog, who writes every day to pay the bills and still works in her spare time to hone her craft and get better at what she does. She exemplifies to me what the term "craftsman" means.

Rob at Depthmarker, a new blog buddy, I enjoy reading the musings of a rock-and-roll electrician from the brotherhood living in the middle of redneck hell. He's a crazy bastard with a gift for words.

And then there is this guy over at Cthulhu's Family Restaurant. He's another new buddy. I haven't a clue what his name is, but I like the way he writes. He tends to be more conservative then I am, and he's a veteran, and he's from the Boston area, all of which mean something, and I like the way he thinks. He's nearly as eclectic in his topics as I am, which also helps me think maybe I'm not nuts.

OK, there's five. I think that means I met all of my award-related obligations and I can post the little gizmo over there guilt-free. If you didn't get named and are hurt by that, I am sorry. I'll mix it around again the next time I get tagged for something.

Thank you, thank you *she says bowing and hogging the microphone*

It always surprises me when someone finds my life exotic or fascinating, since overall it's just my life, but I guess it shouldn't be a surprise, because I find your equally fascinating. To be able to build things like you do, what a gift...

Ugh, obviously that should have been "yours". Fingers were moving faster than my brain apparently.

Well, I guess an update of sorts is in order. I bailed on the novel in a month thing. Getting that damn flu bug (which still lingers due to my punished immune system) right at the beginning of November shot any chance I had of even coming close to 10,000 words. Nevermind 50,000 of them. Maybe next year.

What I find interesting about this particular award/tag is how quickly it has spread. Maybe they all spread this quickly, but without a tracking system it is impossible to tell. The Scolastic Scribe has built in a cool way to do that.

The first award was in mid October and the numbers of folks receiving the award numbers well over 250 already.

Well, I'll be...thanks! I'm amazed that people find me amusing. I call it "laugh to keep from screaming." Thank you!
